Measure OKRs

Measuring OKRs provides visibility into progress, helps maintain alignment, and supports better decision-making. ClarityLoop allows you to measure key results either manually or automatically, depending on the data available and the nature of the goal.

Why measure OKRs?

The OKR framework focuses on measurable outcomes rather than tasks. It helps teams stay aligned on what truly matters by tracking progress with a simple 0–10 scale.

Understanding the 0–10 scale

The 0–10 scale provides a clear, consistent way to track key result progress.

  • 0: No progress made; work hasn't started.
  • 3–4: Initial work has started; limited measurable outcomes so far.
  • 5–6: Midway point, reflecting meaningful progress.
  • 7–8: Strong performance and solid momentum toward the goal.
  • 10: Full achievement of the key result.

Important: Achieving a 6 or 7 often indicates success if the objective was ambitious. Consistently hitting 10 might suggest goals were set too conservatively.

Example:
Key result: "Reduce onboarding time from 7 to 5 days."

  • Score 3: Time reduced to 6.5 days.
  • Score 5: Time reduced to 6 days.
  • Score 7: Time reduced to 5.5 days.
  • Score 10: Time reduced to 5 days.

How to measure OKRs manually

Manual measurement is useful when tracking subjective outcomes, like skills development, or when automatic tracking isn’t available.

  1. Open the OKR dashboard.

    • Navigate to OKRs from the sidebar and select the relevant objective.
  2. Adjust the measurement slider.

    • Locate the slider next to the published key result and move it to reflect the current status.
  3. Save the measurement.

    • Click the save icon to apply the updated measurement.

Example:
Key result: "Improve cross-team communication."

  • The team has completed 3 out of 5 planned workshops.
  • Move the slider to 6 to reflect this 60% completion.

How to measure OKRs automatically

Automatic measurement saves time and ensures accuracy by pulling data directly from integrated tools like Jira.

  1. Open the key result settings.

    • Click "Edit" on the key result you'd like to automate.
  2. Select "Automatic" measurement.

    • Choose Jira or another available integration.
  3. Link the work item.

    • Provide the Jira ticket or relevant identifier.
    • ClarityLoop will track the item's status, updating the key result automatically as work progresses.

How automatic tracking works:

  • For Jira-linked key results, ClarityLoop monitors ticket completion, issue count, or custom fields.
  • Progress is updated in the dashboard without manual input.

Example:
Key result: "Complete 20 customer support documentation updates."

  • Link to a Jira issue tracking these tasks.
  • As each task is marked "Done", ClarityLoop updates the progress accordingly.

How measurements fit into performance insights

Measurements in ClarityLoop do more than track numbers—they contribute to performance conversations and growth discussions:

  • 1:1 meetings: Key result trends appear in agendas for more focused discussions.
  • Feedback insights: Progress aligns with feedback to highlight growth patterns.
  • Manager dashboards: Provide a clear view of team-level OKR progress across direct reports.

Best practices for OKR measurement

  • Update regularly: Regular updates make trends easier to track.
  • Focus on outcomes: Base measurements on completed work, not effort.
  • Use 1:1s to review: Discuss measurement updates during check-ins to stay aligned.
